Celebrate 100 years of one of America's most beloved coin designs with the 2016-W Mercury Dime Centennial Gold Coin. Issued by the U.S. Mint to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the original 1916 Mercury Dime, this special release reimagines Adolph A. Weinman's classic design in 1/10 troy ounce of .9999 fine, 24-karat gold.
The obverse features Weinman's Winged Liberty Head design, commonly known as the “Mercury Dime.” Liberty wears a winged cap symbolizing freedom of thought, surrounded by the inscriptions “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the dual dates “1916” and “2016.” The design faithfully honors the imagery that first appeared on the circulating silver dime a century earlier.
The reverse features Weinman's original fasces and olive branch design, representing strength through unity and peace. Inscriptions include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “AU 24K,” “1/10 OZ.,” and “.9999 FINE GOLD.”
Struck at the West Point Mint and bearing the “W” mint mark, the 2016 Gold Mercury Dime was the first release in the U.S. Mint's three-coin 2016 Centennial Gold Coin program, followed by gold versions of the Standing Liberty Quarter and Walking Liberty Half Dollar. With a limited mintage of 125,000 pieces, this special issue combines classic early 20th-century American coinage with modern 24-karat gold.
